LG’s transparent OLED TV wins five CES awards and redefines the screen experience

Written by:

Yesterday, during CES Media Days, LG announced the LG Signature OLED T, the world’s first 77-inch 4K wireless and transparent TV. The cutting-edge TV combines a transparent 4K OLED screen with wireless video and audio technologies and is powered by a new α (Alpha) 11 AI processor.

Winner of five CES 2024 Innovation Awards, including a Best of Innovation honour, the transparent television leans on the philosophy that TVs are large black annoyances — a bold proposition for a TV manufacturer — and aims to be virtually transparent at times while blending in with its environment at others.

Transparency also opens up options on placement, be it against a window or in the middle of a room, both non-traditional choices no longer impacted by a “wall of blackness.”

Via the included Zero Connect Box, wireless transmissions send 4K images and sound to the OLED T, allowing users to place their TV virtually anywhere, as long as you have access to one power outlet.

While in transparent mode, you can showcase artwork, videos, or photos with the Always-On-Display (AOD) feature. LG says that “content displayed on the transparent screen appears to float in air, yet simultaneously fuses with the surrounding space to create a compelling and atmospheric visual effect.”

Another display option is the T-Bar feature that shows information like news alerts, weather updates, or song titles along the bottom of the screen while also presenting a clear, unobstructed view of the space behind.

“An incredible feat of consumer-driven innovation, LG SIGNATURE OLED T offers brand-new screen experiences plus the picture quality and performance of our award-winning OLED technology,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s transparent OLED gives customers greater freedom to curate their living spaces, completely redefining what’s possible and pointing the way to an exciting future for the television industry.”

Personally, I love the look of this. I’ve long thought about buying one of the TVs that double as art frames for the area adjacent to our kitchen where our family congregates while cooking or hosting guests. This new, transparent design takes that concept to the next level.

While no specific launch date or price has been announced, if these come in at an affordable price range, I can see a massive potential for these to be hugely popular and for other manufacturers to hop on board this trend as soon as possible.

It’s worth noting that Samsung has demoed transparent microLEDs, but as the non-transparent microLED TVs are priced in the $200K range, it’s going to be a long time before we see that technology as a viable option for most households.

The LG Signature OLED T is currently being showcased at CES 2024 from January 9-12.

CES — formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show — is held annually in January at the Las Vegas Convention Center and is where many companies announce new products and technologies.
